The Gift of Commitment

Hello My Friend!

I hope the new year is off to a wonderful start! I almost didn’t write this blog tonight because I had other writing work, so I not only missed my 9pm deadline, but combined with my not feeling well, I’m also very exhausted.

BUT I’m writing this blog anyway because in the couple minutes it took me to close my tabs from working, I realized that my promise to publish a blog at 9pm three days a week goes much further than just another deadline to add to my to-do list, but it represents trust in myself and, more importantly, my love for myself.

For me, writing for Simply Shreya is believing that I am capable of changing someone’s life for the better, even if it’s in a small way. So, it doesn’t mean I need to inspire someone to completely overhaul their life (although if I do ever inspire anyone to do that… well, I will be so incredibly grateful), but even things as small as inspiring someone to make one healthier habit a day or incorporate daily meditation into their lives would mean the world to me because I’ll have helped someone somewhere in my own little way. I truly believe that a little impact can make an enormous difference in the long run because that’s the butterfly effect, and for me, I want to be a butterfly that helps change someone’s world for the better; Simply Shreya is my way of being that butterfly.

More than that, Simply Shreya is also my outlet. It’s my cry to the world as I learn new things and struggle through finding my most aligned path; it’s my vision as I build myself into who I believe I can be; it’s my frustration as I repeat old habits and don’t carry through on my promises; it’s my love for myself, so I hold myself accountable to be the best version of myself. At the end of the day, Simply Shreya documents my growth personally and spiritually. And as a result, it is a mirror for me to look through, so I can see clearly who is on the other side and work with her every day to deepen our relationship and the love that ties us together.

It’s important to recognize, however, that, as we all do, I have many commitments in my life. Whether it is school or work, friends or family, housework or errands, every single thing requires energy transfer. Some commitments grace us with love, others with money, others with cleanliness or health, but every single thing we do both takes from us as well as gives. Simply Shreya gives me joy, peace, and builds my trust and love for myself, but it also takes time and energy. So, when I’m exhausted after a long day and not feeling well (i.e. tonight), it’s easy to forget the gifts this blog gives me and instead, choose the “easy” way out - not show up for myself and not keep my promise… “just this once”. But isn’t that exactly what leads to slowly giving up on those promises? And when you love someone, you keep your promises to them, don't you?

From there, my decision to write my blog post became easy because it came down to this: I love myself, so I’m going to show myself that. And by loving myself and showing up for myself, I show up for others too, just like I want to do. It’s not always going to be easy, but no relationship ever is. So, why do we always beat ourselves up when it gets hard with ourselves? The most important part to remember is that, even when things get hard, you show yourself that you love yourself anyway. Just like you would for anyone else you love. For me, tonight, I did that. I hope you show yourself you love yourself too.

Yours Truly,

Shreya
